• There is a vaccine against the most common strain of ebolavirus in humans for those who are eligible.
• Ebolaviruses are not native to the U.S. and most workers are very unlikely to be exposed to them. There have been no known cases of EVD acquired in the U.S. since the 2014-2016 West African outbreak.
• EVD typically spreads by contact with body fluids or contaminated items from a living or recently deceased person or animal infected with the disease.
• Although ebolaviruses are not transmitted through the air, some medical, laboratory, and other tasks that involve mechanical disruption of body fluids may expose workers to virus particles through aerosol droplets.
• A person with EVD is not considered contagious until they develop symptoms.
• In 2022-2023, Uganda experienced an outbreak of EVD that resulted in 55 hemorrhagic fever-related deaths among the 142 people with confirmed infections.

Employers must take steps to protect workers who may have occupational exposure to EVD. These include, but are not limited to healthcare and laboratory workers, morticians, emergency responders, transportation, and travel workers, and those in the housekeeping industry.
